Description :
WORK / PROJECT: Cooperation established with the township of Fjarðabyggð has started to develop with their environmental department. Volunteers will mainly work on finishing an already started project, the construction of a hiking path guiding visitors and locals to a nearby forested area, Páskahellir. Additional work might include planting trees and cleaning up tasks in the mentioned area.
ACCOMMODATION: Volunteers will be accommodated in a house belonging to the local community with standard facilities. Meals will be prepared and cooked by volunteers themselves.
LOCATION: Neskaupstaður, at 700 Km from Reykjavik, has the largest population of any of the towns in the east fjords and is a busy fishing port year-round. Most people are employed in the flourishing fishing industry.
It is in fact the most easterly town, nestling on the north shore of Norðfjörður and hosting a little under 1700 inhabitants.
Eyðibyggðir (abandoned settlements), between Eskifjörður and Neskaupstaður, is the hiker’s utopia, and those unable to take long walks can sail there on a cabin cruiser. There are innumerable walking trails through the magnificent landscape of this area, whether over mountain passes, through valleys, or along the seashore. During the summer, a walk up the hill to the north takes one through a small forest plantation, where young conifers interspersed with silver birch provide a very natural environment for a variety of flora and fauna.
LANGUAGE: English will be the official language in the camp.
TERMINAL: Closest International Airport: Keflavík (Reykjavík), KEF, nearest domestic airport is Egilsstaðir (EGS), while the closest bus stop is in town.
