Description :
WORK / PROJECT: We will start cooperating with the local community of Suğureyri and the development of the area to attract more visitors to this remote place in the Icelandic Western Fjords. Volunteers will work preparing and putting up guiding signs, marking the attractions in the area and setting up a camping-site. Additional to that, volunteers might have the opportunity to work on a vegetable garden.
ACCOMMODATION: The accommodation will be provided in a local guesthouse, volunteers will have all needed facilities and a kitchen will be available to cook.
LOCATION: Suğureyri is a small and friendly fishing village on the south shore of Súgandafjörğur, located in the Western Fjords of Iceland, about 500 km away from Reykjavík. It is surrounded by spectacular mountains and on the north shores trees grow high up the mountain slopes - a rare sight in Iceland. Fishing and fish processing are the main activities, but tourism is increasing, a variety of interesting places are to be explored and deep sea angling is popular.
Many small boats are equipped and run from Suğureyri, characterising the village, especially during the summer.
Hot water is in the ground at Laugar near Suğureyri and is used to heat buildings and houses and provides the water in the swimming pool in Suğureyri, which is the only outdoor thermal pool in the vicinity and very popular. Inhabitants: 300.
LANGUAGE: English will be the official language in the camp.
TERMINAL: Closest International Airport: Keflavík (Reykjavík), KEF. Closest domestic airport and bus terminal Ísafjörğur (IFJ).
