01.08.2007 : SEEDS 10. Sólheimar, Sjálfbært samfélag

After a busy first week in Sólheimar, our third group of volunteers in the village this year has settled into this unique community.

Our 14 volunteers, from the USA, Greece, Germany, Austria, Spain, The Netherlands and the UK, have been working alongside the local people throughout the village.

Some volunteers have had the opportunity to contribute to the whole process of growing organic cucumbers and tomatoes, from planting them to packing them ready to be sold (in bio-degradable containers of course!). Others volunteers have given their energies to the forestry section, helping to plant trees that will be used all over Iceland which may will help to enrich existing green spaces and re-vegetating other vulnerable areas throughout the country.

Next week will see a great international evening and a puppet show with a difference! Lead by the group’s Environmental Messenger, Lara Marx, they will be the first SEEDS volunteers to create an entry for the Beauty and the Beast competition, the competition for groups of volunteers throughout Europe to show that waste can be re-used (and be beautiful). The group here in Sólheimar is currently using the waste from the camp to make great puppets and a show for all the residents on their last night.

The artwork produced by the camp will be presented at a reception on Wednesday August 8th at 19:00 in the coffee house Kaffihúsið Græna kannan, which will be opened by Óskar Jón Helgason, Valgeir F. Backman from the village, as Lara Marx and Letizia Bottoli from SEEDS. Organic snacks and drinks will be served and the reception will feature a performance by the international volunteers. The reception is open to the public.

The artwork will find a new home at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. What used to be local garbage will become international art - alongside artworks from similar projects.

The project is a part of UNESCO’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (www.unesco.org). The project is organised by SEEDS (www.seedsiceland.org), which cooperates with CCIVS, the Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service at UNESCO (www.unesco.org/ccivs). This is part of SEEDS' work to use volunteer exchanges to preserve the environment and create peace and mutual understanding.

14.07.2007 : Dozens of volunteers all around Iceland! Thanks!

It is high season right now in Iceland and SEEDS has 60 volunteers all around the country in different projects in Akranes, Kópasker, Raufarhöfn, Patreksfjörður, Tálknafjörður, Viðey, Reykjavík, Bláfjöll, Krísuvík and Grindavík areas....

This summer 2007 we will host more than 300 international volunteers, coming from 31 different countries!! They are giving their time and energy in more than 22 different projects all over the isle!

We bring together volunteers from different nationalities and backgrounds aiming at building up international understanding and therefore encouraging peace while working for an identified need. All parties involved benefit: The individual volunteers, the local hosting communities and Iceland as a whole!

While working in teams tackling certain projects, SEEDS also addresses among them human, social and environmental concerns, promoting intercultural and common learning.

Our projects in Iceland are highly supported by the local hosts and the volunteers participating; additionally we receive strong support for our long term projects from the Youth in Action and Leonardo da Vinci Programmes of the European Commission.

SEEDS wants to thank all those committed individuals that volunteer for us, people that dedicate part of their lives to our cause and that trigger the consequences of our endeavours. Icelandic and foreign volunteers that take aside precious time, from 2 weeks up to one year, to drive forward this initiative and shape the association, to start seeing the fruits and results coming from SEEDS spread, laid out and now growing up!

12.07.2007 : SEEDS 08. Reykjavík - Bláfjöll

One more group of 13 SEEDS volunteers have arrived to the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík, and will be here for the next 2 weeks in the Bláfjöll, Krísuvík and Grindavík areas. The weather has been amazing for the last weeks in the South-west of Iceland and we hope the climate will stays this way, as most of the work our groups do is outdoors!

The aim of the project is to halt the erosion of vegetation and soils and to strengthen the ecosystem of the area by enhancing its natural vegetation. The process of using organic waste materials as fertilizing means, we achieve a double dividend.

Close to 70% of the total population of Iceland lives in this area of the country and the area has suffered of overgrazing and volcanic activity; some areas are stripped entirely of top soil.

Volunteers will basically perform three different types of work: a) Fertilising the slopes in Bláfjöll by yard-waste cover. This is the most important work. b) Monitoring the survival and growth rate of tree plantations of former years in the areas of Krýsuvík and Grindavík. c) Cleaning up litter in the vicinity of caves in the Bláfjöll area.

SEEDS international volunteers will be working hand-on-hand with Icelandic youngsters from the working school, Vinnuskóli.

In Langanesbyggð and Þórshöfn, SEEDS has a group of 10 international volunteers hailing from Canada, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, The Netherlands and the UK! They will be hosted by the local community of Langanesbyggð, which has been a host of international volunteers from SEEDS since we started our work in Iceland. Our local contact, "Aggi", has wide experience in dealing with groups of volunteers and surely joined with Kristbjörg, Eyþór, Oddur and the inhabitants of the town will try their best to ensure our volunteers have a great Icelandic experience!

We will be working on environmental related matters. One of the biggest pollution issues in the area is the litter brought to the shore due to sea currents that even bring timber as far as from Siberia. Volunteers will be working on cleaning up the shores and beaches in the area. Additional work will be undertaken as reforestation tasks, planting trees and taking care of those already planted. Depending on the advance of the mentioned tasks volunteers might be marking some walking paths and hiking trails.
