19.02.2007 : Útţrá - Hitt Húsiđ

SEEDS Iceland took part once again in the event Útţrá, which took place at Hitt Húsiđ last Friday. We had the opportunity to introduce to Icelandic youngsters the possibilities they have to take part in voluntary service projects abroad.

This year Útţrá was organised the same weekend as the Universities were introducing their departments, then many high school students came to the events from the Icelandic country side as well.

Hitt Húsiđ was founded in 1991 to satisfy the need that had arisen for leisure accommodation for young people aged between 16 and 25. Hitt Húsiđ has gradually developed into a center for youth culture and information, a place where young people can get advice on varied topics and assistance in putting their ideas into practice.

20.01.2007 : Towards an Environmental office! Paperless Office!

SEEDS -SEE beyonD borderS- has committed itself towards environmental protection and resources preservation; therefore with this new year we want to reduce as much as possible the negative impact of our activities on the environment.

As an environmentally conscious organisation we acknowledged the effects some of our activities are having on the nature resources and society at large (eg. the use of paper and printer ink). As a result, we would like to operate a 'virtually' paperless office.

We will try to produce all documents and guides needed for our activities in electronic format (eg. PDF format) and welcome new ideas or suggestions to increase the consequences of our sustainable approach in order to act correctly and responsibly.

Let us reduce our own footprints on the planet!

01.12.2006 : .... EVS leaving their second home ....

It is already December... It has been 7 months since they arrived to this island in the Middle of the North Atlantic... The time for all of them to head back home arrived today...

They, our first flock of EVS volunteers ever, left.... They all came from different corners, from Spain to Slovakia, France to the Czech Republic and Poland! As some of them said: "...we found a family here and spent 7 unforgettable months of our lifes..."

Same here, we made a great experience with all of you, we learned so much from all of you, we had such beautiful moments here and around the country, so many days and nights together, in the camps, in Grenimelur, exploring Iceland, funny memories and moments that we will always remember and will make us smile when thinking about them :)

Alena, Beatriz, Ivana, Adam, Javier and Romain: Many thanks for dedicating part of your lifes to SEEDS and this project, without you this summer would not have been as great as it was!!

We hope we will meet you soon again, perhaps next summer? We will see, but for sure, your family in Iceland will miss you a lot and would be very glad seeing you back here in the future!

All the best for your future, good luck with your plans and dreams, with your studies, jobs, getting back home and re-adapting! Good luck and please keep up the good energy and motivation that took sky high our summer and the summer of hundreds of other International volunteers!

We stay here with Agatá and Jérémie, we are glad they stay longer with us, but we all (including them) are sad you left.. We miss you....

Takk fyrir okkur, viđ sjáumst !!!

16.11.2006 : Bowling in Keiluhöllin

The night before Javier’s departure was our last chance to meet and have fun like in „ the good old days“. To cut it short: Unusual place - Bowling den, usual fun and even green northern lights!! Oscar revealed his hidden bowling talent, Jérémie his unique style, Jorge - classy Latino, Alena dangerously quickly improved in scoring, instead of Romain played Mister TetraPack, Bea was winning with usual quiet charm, Maria played in style „rather do and be later sorry than not to do”, Javier approached the game carefully with pseudonym Sabiduria, Ivuska triumphally jumped, Elín and Erna helped my team to win and I was losing but it did not matter as I was in the winning team.

Yes, it was a nice evening.. The only negative aspect - since then I have not seen Javi again.

But hopefully we will see each other one day again. Greetings to Spain! Agata Marzecova

12.11.2006 : Celebration of SEEDS' birthday

The beginning of November has brought, apart from huge amounts of snow, few other memorable events. One of the most awaited was definitely the first birthday of SEEDS. The gathering took place in the headquarters at Grettisgata, best time of the week, on Friday. A little bit of Autumn nostalgia caused by the fact that this is also the time of projects' end and time for farewell wishes, was cured by the fact that almost everybody who took part in the on-arrival training met. Almost because quite few mentors (2) already migrated to England, for winter..

Our on-arrival time in May when we volunteers arrived- before leaving for our camps and other activities- and were getting familiar with Iceland was very exciting thanks to Ásdís, Lucie, Maria, Andy, Greg, Jorge, Oscar, Ubaldo and the Icelandic mentors who prepared a great programme for us. This party was a great opportunity to repeat the nice experience of meeting so many nice people in one place and at the same time. I hope all who are concerned agree! In addition we had good humour greatly contributed by other co-volunteers and friends from AUS.

What always surprises me about the current combination of SEEDS members and volunteers? Definitely, the fact (without exaggerating) that all our parties go beyond expectations. Good party with short preparation, cool present from nothing, nice food from all Europe, original Latino dancers, and sometimes even washing dishes without quarrelling. And this party with surprising visit from Sólheimar and super-sized birthday candle was just a proof of my previous statement.

The first year for a young NGO is a very challenging time with moments of uncertainty, unexpected situations, difficult moments and risky changes. From my point of view SEEDS organization, which provided 7 volunteers with meaningful EVS service, prepared 14 environmental work camps as a way for responsible travelling to Iceland, received young Leonardo students and together with workcampers and students left evident positive impact in different areas in Iceland, balanced through these obstacles with elegance.

Therefore I want to congratulate one more time and I wish SEEDS many years of successful activities and fun in Iceland. Agata Marzecova.
